Khaplu, 103km east of Skardu, was historically the second-largest kingdom in Baltistan under the Yabgo dynasty, guarding the trade route to Ladakh along the Shyok River. Its restored royal palace is now a heritage hotel run by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
